We had heard on the grapevine how personable and inspirational was our Superior General, Father Adolfo Nicholas. He certainly didn’t disappoint when he came to the province meeting in Swanwick to spend some time with the British Jesuits. Items on the agenda included collaboration in mission with the laity, dialogue with Islam, the Church’s response to environmental concerns and the formation of Jesuits. In typical Jesuit style, Fr. General’s approach was to listen first before responding on the final day as he shared his thoughts on all that had been presented. He also took an hour with the JIFs (Jesuit’s in formation) to answer our questions and give us some tips on how to make the most of our years in formation.
His message was clear. He wants to see three things in particular in Jesuits and our works; depth, creativity and life in the Spirit. He believes whole-heartedly in the mission of lay people. Jesuits should be at the service of the laity as they strive to carry out their own life-giving mission.
