The arrival of the New Year only means one thing for a Jesuit novice; the spiritual exercises. St. Ignatius composed the spiritual exercises as a means for people to get in touch with God and to discern where the divine call is leading them. Every call is planted deep in the roots of the heart. Spending 30 days in silence allows the retreatant to hear what is happening deep inside and to recognise the deepest desires of his heart. Having the opportunity to do this 30 day retreat is one of the greatest priveleges granted to those who enter the novitiate.
